Yahoo Mail storage full: your limit, what stops working, and how to free space
Yahoo says your mailbox is full, or close to it, and you're not sure how big it's supposed to be or what you're about to lose. The answer depends partly on where you live. Here's what Yahoo's own help pages say, and the quickest way to get back under the limit.
Short answer: Free Yahoo Mail storage is 20 GB in the US and Canada and 15 GB in the UK, Australia, Germany and other regions. When you're full, new mail sent to you isn't stored and can't be recovered, but your existing emails stay put. To free space, sort by Largest first in the All tab, delete what you don't need in bulk, then empty Trash. Spam doesn't count toward your storage.
How much free storage you get (it depends on your country)
Most articles quote one number for Yahoo Mail. Yahoo itself publishes two, depending on which country's help site you read.
| Where your account is | Free storage | Yahoo's page |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 20 GB | US help, SLN37064 |
| Canada | 20 GB | Canada help, SLN37064 |
| UK and Ireland, Australia, Germany, global English site | 15 GB | Regional help, SLN37214 |
The US page says "Yahoo Mail currently includes 20 GB of free storage with every account" and notes that "the storage amounts and plans referenced in this article are for the United States." Canada's version of the same page gives the same 20 GB figure.
The UK page says "the new storage for standard Yahoo Mail will be 15 GB of free storage with every account." The Australian, German and global versions of that page give the same 15 GB figure.
If you live somewhere else, don't assume either number. Yahoo's US page tells readers outside the US to "check your available storage in your Yahoo Mail account."
Check how much you're using
Yahoo shows your current usage in the account menu. Its steps:
- In a desktop or mobile browser: hover your mouse over the Yahoo or Profile icon in the upper right. The amount you're using appears under "Storage."
- In the Yahoo Mail app: tap the Yahoo or Profile icon in the upper left. The amount you're using appears next to "Storage."
Check this before and after a cleanup so you can see whether the space actually came back.
What "full" means
Yahoo's country pages don't describe a full mailbox in exactly the same words, so here is what each one says.
- US and Canada help pages: "You won't be able to receive or send new emails until space is cleared."
- UK help page: "You won't be able to send new emails until space is cleared."
- US storage plans page: says in one answer that you "may not be able to receive new emails until space is freed up," and in another that you "will be unable to send or receive emails."
One line is the same on every help page, and it's the one that matters most: "Emails sent to you while your mailbox is full are not stored and can't be recovered." A bank statement, a password reset or a reply from a friend that arrives during that time doesn't wait in a queue for you. It's simply not kept.
All versions also say you'll "need to reduce your storage usage to resume normal service."
Your existing mail, and the grace period
Going over the limit doesn't wipe your old mail. Yahoo says: "Your existing emails will remain in your account as long as it stays active."
You also get warning first. The US page says there "will be no impact to your account without prior notice," that you'll receive email alerts if your account goes over, and that Yahoo is "providing a reasonable grace period after you receive notice that your account has exceeded its storage limit." The UK page says you'll "get notice before any impact to your service."
Yahoo doesn't say how long "reasonable" is. Treat the first over-limit notice as the moment to clean up, not something to put off.
Find what's taking the space
Storage is measured in gigabytes, not message counts, so a few hundred emails with big attachments can outweigh thousands of plain-text newsletters. Yahoo Mail on the web can sort by size:
- Open Yahoo Mail in a browser and go to the All tab of your inbox.
- Click the Preferences icon at the top of your inbox.
- Next to "Sort by," select Largest first.
Yahoo notes that "Largest first" is available in the All tab and "sorts emails by total size, including attachments." It also says some sort options aren't available when emails are grouped as Conversations, so if you don't see it, check whether conversation view is on.
Work down from the top. Old photo threads, scanned documents and large files you've already saved elsewhere are usually the fastest wins. Yahoo's own storage page suggests the same thing: delete old or large emails and review large attachments.
Delete in bulk
The other big source of storage is volume: years of promotions, alerts and newsletters from the same handful of senders. Clearing those one screen at a time is slow, and the Yahoo Mail app and the website handle bulk deletes differently.
We walk through every built-in method, including how Select All behaves on large folders, in how to delete thousands of emails in Yahoo Mail. To clear one sender completely, see how to delete all emails from one sender in Yahoo Mail.
Empty Trash (and leave Spam alone)
When you delete an email from your inbox or any folder except Spam, it moves to Trash. Yahoo empties Trash automatically after 7 days and Spam after 30 days, and you can't change those settings.
If you'd rather not wait a week, Yahoo's steps for emptying Trash on the web are:
- Open Yahoo Mail in a desktop browser.
- Click the More icon on the left, below your mail folders, and select Trash.
- Use the Select All checkbox at the top. If there are more than 100 messages, the first 100 are selected and a notification offers to select everything in Trash. Click that link.
- Click the Delete icon, then Yes, delete.
Don't bother clearing Spam to save space. Yahoo says mail in your Spam folder "does not count toward your storage quota." It also deletes Spam on its own after 30 days.
If you'd rather buy more space
Yahoo sells larger storage plans, and Yahoo Mail Plus includes extra storage too. The UK page notes that not all plans are available everywhere, and if you don't see an option to upgrade, it may not be offered in your area.
See the current options on Yahoo's storage plans page. Cleaning up first is still worth it: you'll know how much space you really need before paying for any.
Beware fake "storage full" emails
"Your mailbox is full, click here to keep receiving email" is a common phishing lure across email services, because it creates urgency. Don't sign in through a link in a storage warning. Open Yahoo Mail yourself, in your browser or the app, and check your usage from the Profile menu. If the number there looks normal, the email wasn't real.
A separate issue: inactive mailboxes
Storage limits and inactivity are different rules, but they get mixed up. Briefly:
- If you don't access your Yahoo Mail mailbox for 12 months, it becomes inactive, stops receiving new email, and its emails, folders, contacts and settings are permanently deleted. Yahoo sends reminders 90, 60 and 30 days before. Signing in to your Yahoo account alone doesn't count; you have to open the mailbox.
- If you don't sign in to your Yahoo account for 18 months, the account itself is scheduled for deactivation and deletion.
If you're reading this, you're using your mailbox, so this isn't what's filling it. It's just worth knowing for old accounts you rarely open.
FAQ
Is Yahoo Mail free storage 20 GB or 15 GB?
It depends on your country. Yahoo's US and Canada help pages say Yahoo Mail includes 20 GB of free storage with every account. Its UK, Australia, Germany and global help pages say standard Yahoo Mail gets 15 GB of free storage.
Will Yahoo delete my old emails if my storage is full?
No. Yahoo says your existing emails will remain in your account as long as it stays active. The risk is to new mail: emails sent to you while your mailbox is full are not stored and can't be recovered.
Does the Spam folder count toward Yahoo Mail storage?
No. Yahoo says mail in your Spam folder does not count toward your storage quota. Yahoo also deletes Spam automatically after 30 days.
How do I find the biggest emails in Yahoo Mail?
On Yahoo Mail in a browser, click the Preferences icon at the top of your inbox and set Sort by to Largest first. Yahoo says this option is available in the All tab and sorts by total size, including attachments.
Sorting by size finds the heavy attachments. It doesn't add up how many messages, or how much space, each sender accounts for. That's the gap PurgeInbox is being built to close.
