How to delete thousands of emails in Yahoo Mail

Your Yahoo inbox has tens of thousands of messages, and ticking boxes one page at a time will never get through them. Here is how Yahoo's own bulk tools work, on the web and in the app, and how to make sure deleted mail actually leaves your account.

Updated October 14, 2026 · Yahoo Mail on the web and the Yahoo Mail app

Short answer: On the web, search to narrow the list first, then use select all. It picks 100 emails at a time, and a notice at the top of the screen then offers to select all the messages; click it, then Delete. In the Yahoo Mail app, long-press an email and choose Delete all messages from this sender (up to 10,000 emails per action). Deleted mail goes to Trash, which empties after 7 days, or you can empty it yourself right away.

Which method to use

Mass deleting in Yahoo comes down to three questions: are you on a computer or a phone, do you want a whole folder gone, and can you describe the mail you want gone (a sender, a date range, a keyword)?

You want to delete…UseWhere
Everything in your inbox, or a big chunk of itSelect all, then the "select all messages" linkWeb
Mail matching a sender, date or keywordSearch, then select allWeb
Everything in a folder you madeDelete all emails (folder menu)Web
Everything from one senderDelete all messages from this senderApp

Whichever you pick, finish by emptying Trash.

How select all works on the web

This is the part that trips people up. Yahoo Mail's select all doesn't grab your whole inbox in one go. By default it selects 100 emails at a time, and then Yahoo shows a pop-up notice near the top of the screen with the option to select all messages in your inbox. If you press Delete without clicking that notice, only the first 100 go, and it looks as if Yahoo can't handle more.

Yahoo's steps, with the extra click spelled out:

  1. Open Yahoo Mail in a browser on your computer and go to your inbox.
  2. Tick the checkbox next to any one email.
  3. Click the Expand icon in the upper left. The menu lets you select all emails, read emails, unread emails, starred emails or unstarred emails.
  4. Choose the option you want. The first 100 matching emails are selected.
  5. Look near the top of the screen for the notice offering to select all messages, and click it.
  6. Click the Delete icon at the top of the page.

The menu options are useful on their own. Choosing read emails or unstarred emails is a quick way to clear out the bulk while leaving behind what you've flagged or haven't opened yet.

Before you delete a whole inbox: star the messages you want to keep, then pick unstarred emails from the Expand menu. Everything you starred stays put.

Most people don't want their entire inbox gone. They want years of shop receipts, social alerts and newsletters gone. Searching first shrinks the list to just that mail, and then select all works on the results.

Yahoo gives you two quick ways to search and an advanced one:

Once the results load:

  1. Tick one result, open the Expand menu and select all.
  2. If a notice appears offering to select every matching message, click it.
  3. Click Delete.
  4. Run the search again. If anything is left, repeat.

Yahoo's help pages describe the "select all messages" notice for the inbox and for Trash. If you don't see it on a search, you're deleting 100 at a time, so re-run the search and repeat until the results are empty.

For a step-by-step version focused on one sender, see how to delete all emails from one sender in Yahoo.

Delete everything in a folder

If you've been filing mail into your own folders, Yahoo can empty one in a single action:

  1. Click the Folders icon.
  2. Mouse over the folder's name.
  3. Click the More icon on the left side of the screen, below your mail folders, and select Delete all emails.

The catch: this option isn't available for your Inbox or for system folders. It only works on folders you've created. For the inbox, use select all.

In the app: delete everything from one sender

The Yahoo Mail app for iPhone and Android has a bulk action the website doesn't: delete every message from one sender in a couple of taps.

  1. In the Yahoo Mail app, long-press an email from the sender until the options menu appears.
  2. Tap Delete all messages from this sender.
  3. Tap Delete all to confirm, then follow any on-screen instructions.

Yahoo notes "there is a limit of 10,000 emails per action" when deleting multiple emails. If one sender has sent you more than that, run it again. The deleted mail moves to Trash, where Yahoo says it will be emptied later.

The limit that matters more in practice is that it works one sender at a time. If 150 different stores and newsletters fill your inbox, that's 150 long-presses, and you first have to work out which senders they are.

Empty Trash (and skip Spam)

Deleting doesn't remove mail straight away. When you delete from your inbox or any folder except Spam, the email moves to Trash. Yahoo deletes Trash automatically after 7 days, and you can't change that setting. If you're clearing space and don't want to wait a week, empty it yourself:

  1. In Yahoo Mail on your computer, click the More icon on the left side of the screen, below your mail folders, and select Trash.
  2. Use the Select All checkbox at the top of the screen.
  3. If Trash holds more than 100 messages, only the first 100 are selected. Click the link in the notification at the top of the screen to select all messages in Trash.
  4. Click the Delete icon, then Yes, delete.

Check before you empty. If you deleted in a hurry, glance through Trash first and move anything you still want back out.

Don't spend time on Spam. Yahoo says mail in the Spam folder "does not count toward your storage quota or need any further action," and Spam is deleted automatically after 30 days.

Finding the biggest emails

If your aim is storage rather than clutter, a few large messages can matter more than thousands of small ones. On the web, click the Preferences icon at the top of your inbox and set Sort by to Largest first. That option is available in the All tab and sorts by total size, including attachments. Some sort options aren't available when your mail is grouped as conversations.

Stop the pile from coming back

Clearing 20,000 emails is wasted effort if the same senders refill your inbox by next year.

FAQ

Can you select all emails in Yahoo Mail at once?

Yes. On the web, select all picks 100 emails at a time by default. Yahoo then shows a notice near the top of the screen with an option to select all the messages, not just the first 100. Click it before you press Delete.

Is there a limit on how many Yahoo emails I can delete at once?

In the Yahoo Mail app, Yahoo says there is a limit of 10,000 emails per action when deleting multiple emails. If a sender has sent you more than that, run the action again.

Where do deleted Yahoo emails go?

Deleted email moves to the Trash folder. Yahoo empties Trash automatically after 7 days, and you can't change that setting. To clear it sooner, open Trash, select all messages and delete them.

Do I need to delete my Yahoo Spam folder to free up storage?

No. Yahoo says mail in your Spam folder does not count toward your storage quota, and Spam is deleted automatically after 30 days.

Yahoo's tools work well once you know what to clear. PurgeInbox is being built to show you, sender by sender, where the clutter in your inbox comes from, so you can clear many senders in one pass.
